Under the sea lies a beautiful kingdom called Atlantica. The kingdom is ruled by king Triton, who lives in his castle with his 7 daughters and his wife, Queen Athena. King Triton loves his children and wife very much. Every night Queen Athena sings a special song to Ariel and her sisters. Queen Athena sings a lullaby about music and how important it is. King Triton gives the Queen a beautiful music box, because it is her birthday. Ariel and her sisters love seeing their parents happy. Suddenly pirates come crashing the party and steal their golden instruments. The queen races back to save her music box and swims right into danger. She dies. King Triton angrily bans all music from Atlantica. It reminded him too much of his wife.

Ten years later, Ariel wakes up to the first sign of spring. Marina Del Ray is the royal governess who takes care of the princesses. Benjamin is her kindhearted assistant. Marina doesn’t like taking care of the princesses. Sebastian, the crab is King Triton’s chief of staff. “I hate this job!” Marina tells Benjamin, “I want to be chief of the staff!” . Every morning, the princesses take a walk with their father. But Ariel wants to do something different, something fun. “Not Today!” replies King Trition. Ariel tries to have fun while she and her sisters are on their walk. King Triton becomes very angry at Ariel. He punishes Ariel by making her scrape barnacles. Meanwhile ,in Marina's room in the castle, Benjamin doesn’t like feeding Marina’s pets (which are eels). “Ooh, that Sebastian!” says Marina Del Ray. She really wants his job. Marina imagines herself as King Triton's new chief of staff.

As Ariel scrapes barnacles, she hears something odd, it's music! Ariel then runs into a fish named Flounder. He's singing! “Hi, I’m Flounder”, says the fish. “I’m Ariel”, says the little mermaid. “Don't you know it’s against the law to play music!” Ariel asks. Then palace guards catch Flounder from behind. Ariel helps flounder to escape from the guards. They run into Sebastian. Ariel then convinces Sebastian to let Flounder go. Later, Triton comes in to say good night to his daughters. They have to sleep. Ariel is still upset about being punished. Then she sees Flounder. “Where is He going?” Ariel thinks. She follows Flounder to a secret door. She falls through it.

Ariel is greeted by musical clams. She has entered a secret nightclub called the Catfish Club! Ariel is thrilled to find such a wonderful place. The Catfish Club band is hopping tonight! Ink Spot plays keyboards, Shelbow is on drums, Cheeks plays the horn, and Ray-Ray plays the bass. The Catfish Club’s star performer is revealed to be Sebastian! He's is not happy to see Ariel! “Wait! I won’t tell!” calls Ariel. But everyone swims away. For the first time in ten years, Ariel sings mother’s lullaby and plays the piano. It makes her feel better. Everyone in the Catfish Club comes back to her voice. Ariel’s voice is beautiful! Ariel takes the musicians oath. She will always help her fellow music lovers!

Triton orders Sebastian to watch over Ariel, because he wants to know where she's going. Ariel’s sisters get to know the secret and want to go to the Catfish Club, too! The next night, all the princesses have a great time at the Catfish Club! But Marina has followed them. She sees Sebastian and the princesses making music at the club. She tells King Triton about the Catfish Club. “So this is how you watch over my daughters?” Triton asks Sebastian angrily. “Lock them all away!” he orders. The band (including Sebastian) is thrown in the dungeon. Triton makes Marina his new chief of staff and destroys the Catfish Club. “I will not have music in my kingdom!” King Triton shouts. Marina is very happy. Soon she’ll have all the power she ever wanted, and more!
"I may not remember much about my mother, but I know she wouldn’t have wanted this!" Attina, the oldest sister, says. They are locked in their room. The music they loved is gone. The blossom is the only beautiful thing in her world now. Triton walks through the palace garden where there is a statue of Athena. He misses his wife very much.

Ariel decides to run away. The band is in the dungeon and Ariel sets them free. “Come on”, Ariel says. “Lets go!” “Without music, Atlantica just isn’t hone”, Ariel says. Away from Atlantica, the band lets loose. Then Benjamin discovers Ariel is missing. King Triton wonders if he was too hard on Sebastian and the girls. “Ariel is missing!” cries Attina. “We’ve looked everywhere!” Triton is very worried.

Sebastian leads the band to a strange place they have never seen. “There’s more to this place than meets the eye,” Sebastian says. Marina doesn’t want to lose her new job! She has a plan but needs Benjamin’s key. “Who wants crab cakes?” asks Marina to her eels. As Ariel wakes up (the next morning) at a familiar sound. She finds her mother’s music box. “When your mother died, the whole kingdom was heartbroken,” Sebastian explains. “that is why music is banned.” Ariel realizes that her father has forgotten how to be happy. Ariel decides to take the music box back to her father. The band is worried. They do not want to go back to Atlantica. They are afraid they will be arrested again. Ariel and Sebastian then head back to Atlantica alone. “Hey Ariel what’s up”, says Flounder. Meanwhile marina’s eels are hiding in the forest.

“Surprise!” shouts Marina. She does not want Ariel and her friends to return home. Ariel, Sebastian and Flounder escape the eels. Marina and Sebastian begin fighting. Ariel and Flounder are trapped by the eels. The band comes to the rescue. Sebastian beats Marina. But Marina won’t give up. Ariel rushes to help Sebastian. King Triton arrives just in time to see Ariel in danger. She loses consciousness. “What have I done!?” Triton asks sadly. He begins to sing softly along with the open music box, trying to wake up Ariel. She opens her eyes! “Daddy, let’s go home,” Ariel says quietly.

After they return home, Sebastian is named court composer-and King Triton takes the musicians oath! Marina and Benjamin are arrested and thrown into the dungeon. Once again, Atlantica is filled with laughter, love, and music. And that is where the first movie begins!
